The increased need for renewable energy sources may present opportunities for landowners to make use of land which would otherwise be unsuitable for development.
A recent decision saw members of the planning committee vote to unanimously approve the development of a 25ha solar farm at Marksbury Plain. Planning officers concluded the works can be considered inappropriate development in the Green Belt, however significant weight was given to the development’s contribution to national and local renewable energy targets. Consideration was also afforded to the temporary nature of the scheme, with a lifespan of 40years. Ultimately, the local authority considered the proposal amounted to very special circumstances, therefore recommending approval of the solar development.
